Footscray Cycling Club Criteriums @ VU Hoppers Crossing, 12/11/15.
Round 8 of the Footscray Cycling Club’s 2015/6 Criterium season was held out at the Victoria University track out at Hoppers Crossing, with Wednesday night’s racing being held in calm and temperate conditions in stark contrast the week before. In the A-Grade race, current World Record holder in the 4km Pursuit C5 Para-cycling, Michael Gallagher, blew the field apart with some impressive power. The 36 year old Sunbury resident and Carnegie Caulfield club member is currently a pro cyclist riding for the Hampton Cycles Masters VIS Team, and the Australian Paralympic Team, and noted Time Trial specialist, saw an opportunity emerge about 15 minutes into the race. ‘Only 15 minutes into the race I put in an acceleration, and I noticed there was one guy dangling off the front and one guy on my wheel, and we just committed from there. With about 10 minutes to go, I attacked on the hill as I didn’t want it to come down to a sprint; and I just rode to the finish solo.’ Gallagher took the win from Travis Small and Ben O’Leary.
In B-Grade, 31 year old Pt Cook resident David Ross attacked at the 20 minute mark, and was joined in the next few laps by Mark Micallef, Vito Depetro and Vlad Djuric; the foursome building up a half lap lead by the end of the race, with Ross doing the lion’s share of the hard work in the break. With a lap to go, Ross powered off the front to the win, and the three remaining riders squared up for the sprint, with Micallef taking second, Depetro third and Djuric fourth.
In C-Grade, Sam Edmund soloed off the front of the bunch and powered to a huge win, as he had done last week in D-Grade, and signalled his intention to move up the grades in short order. ‘I have been riding for ages, and just wanted to give racing a go. I’m a young dad, so I’m pretty lucky to even be able to race.’ In the sprint behind Edmund, spring chicken Seb Chetcuti just managed to take second place ahead of old boiler Phil Tehan in third.
In D-Grade, Graeme ‘Porky’ Wilson showed the bunch that he still has a decent kick in a bunch sprint, taking the win over James Stuart and Mark Koutsogiannis.
